Hero and survivor of the Second World War. The then Captain Richard Wallace Annand was awarded the first Victoria Cross of the Second World War when serving with the 2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry.

This life size bust was taken from the full figure sculpture which is installed in the South Shields Town Hall and is featured in the "Public Sculptures" section. It was modelled in clay and reproduced in resin bronze due to weight considerations
